BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi military spokesmansays the army's whole
51st Division is still fighting, denying a claim by U.S. officials that
the commander and his deputy have surrendered.
"The 51st army division is still fighting the invading troops
ferociously and courageously and inflicting upon the enemy forces the
ugliest losses," he said, reading a statement on Iraqi television on
Saturday.
U.S. defence officials said on Friday that the commander and the vice
commander of the division had surrendered to marines in the southern Iraqi
desert. It was the first reported surrender by senior Iraqi military
officers. |
